Resisting the temptation to buy a new camshaft position sensor which most people including myself, seemed to think was the source of the problem, I bought a PA SOFT Scanner interface first, to read any error codes myself. After duly setting up my PC in the shed near the car and plugging it in I ran a scan. Result 1 error in DME: "83". After a long time googling and reading threads on forums about other owners problems, I was able to establish this was a faulty Crankshaft position Sensor. £27+£2.95 postage from Tops Solutions on Ebay and after just over 24 hours the car is running perfectly again. The old genuine BMW sensor was noticably deteriorated around the joint where the cable entered the unit with the plastic actually crumbling and falling apart. I was lucky that my engine had the sensor fitted at the front beneath the thermostat housing, and not at the rear under the starter motor.
The PA Soft scanner worked well for the minimal cost but gives no clue to what the codes mean. I am now going in search by google etc,of the meaning of error code "6" in the SRS airbag module and hopefully get the airbag light off my dash. Is there a list somewhere out there of these error codes and there meaning?
Anyway hope my experiences are of help to somebody.
