Steering Lock/Ignition Bit bust! Empty Steering Lock/Ignition Bit bust!

Post  gayled Fri Sep 11, 2009 2:28 am

Hi can anyone please help. I've got a 1987 E30. Last night I couldn't turn the key fully in the ignition. RAC man pulled the ignition out the other side of the steering column and said I'd need a new steering lock. Anybody fitted one of these or shall it put it in my local garage and await a huge bill?

Thanks

Gayle

Hi Gayle,
heres a diagram of the part... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1131&mospid=47257&btnr=32_0844&hg=32&fg=30

It can be a faff to change but isnt rocket science to replace. Second hand units are available with keys. Heres an example. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/E30-ignition-steering-lock-housing-with-key_W0QQitemZ320418437435QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4a9a6d593b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

If you dont feel confident in having a go, you could always obtain the part and ask your local garage or mobile mechanic to fit it for you.... Wink

Hope this helps.

Thanks heaps. Bugger, forgot I'd need a new key too!! Might give it a whirl and change myself then (!). I know of a couple of mechanics that might go mobile if I get really stuck! Am sure a new part will cost a fortune so thanks for the link on EBay.

The new part wouldnt leave you much change out of £500! So it makes sense to buy second hand at a breakers or a person thats breaking the car. Just make sure you get the key!... Laughing

Good luck...

Dropped into my local garage at lunchtime and they reckon I just need a new barrell and key! Happy days! BMW want the grand sum of £27 plus VAT! Ok so I'll have two keys now but I can live with that! Garage said it won't take them long to fit so I think I'll hand the job over coz of the sheared off bolts etc. Thanks for your help though, this is why the forums are always great to pick brains on! cheers
