535i cutting out and miss firering Empty 535i cutting out and miss firering

Hi, ive got a 535i e39 auto every now and again the revs keep going up and down then engine stalls, when i restart it and push the accelerater it miss fires and today back fired and also if i manage to get down the road it feels like the engine stops then starts again while accelerating.it doesnt do it all the time but is very annoying any ideas?

Could be the camshaft sensor breaking down.
