2002 320TD problems
Hi Guys,
just got myself a 320TD on a '52 plate, got one fault showing up on diagnostics "3F01" which relates to a short circuit or open earth on the charge air pressure sensor, which i am assuming is the boost pressure sensor?...
Also, got some issues with starting, sometimes i go out and there just seems to be no fuel eing delivered, RAC came out one time and jiggled a multiplug at the front end of the fuel rail and it started after that...so looks like it could be that but i have been told the BMW don't sell just a multiplug they would more than likely only sell the whole piece of loom for that part?...any ideas
car has full service history, only done 10k in last 2 years runs nice and quietly for a diesel and when it does start...seriously considering taking it back to trader though coz os starting issues tho
Cheers

Re: 2002 320TD problems
hi spud,
the charge air pressure sensor is the boost sensor. the multiplug is likely to be the wiring for the injectors and probably just has a bad crimp in it. its nothing any good auto electrician cannot sort out and pretty simple to do... do you have any warranty?

hit hanks for the reply :0)
yeah there is 6 month warranty on the vehicle.
Jut got a call from the garage, earlier today they where chasing loads of different leads from fault codes and replacing sensor after snesor, in the end they decided to tackle the boost pressure sensor on the bulkhead, the one i mentioned earlier, and heyho...it was unplugged...now got full power and all other faults cleared...lets hope it was causing the starting issue too.
one last little thing...no smoke coming from the car, but there is a slight squeal on the turbo...spools up perfectly, but there is an audible squeal briefly...?...

Re: 2002 320TD problems
As long as it is a slight wheeze or whistle as it spools up then that is fine... One of the biggest signs of a worn out turbo is excessive smoke and/or excessive oil consumption, so you'll be ok...

Re: 2002 320TD problems
it indeed my thing
there is a company a few mile away from me that specialise in diesel performance, they run a couple of Bora TDi's in a racing series somewhere, they claim to have them pushing 220BHP, but they have said with minimal cost they can push 190 out of the BMW without changing parts

Re: 2002 320TD problems
hmmm never got to collect it this morning...the mech went to start it and lo and behold it didn't fire....fault saying "fuel rail pressure on engine start"...so he has replaced the two fuel pressure switches/sensors for the fuel rail now as well and will try again tomoz...fingers crossed...bah

Re: 2002 320TD problems
well all going...but i found out why the charge air pressure sensor was dissconnected....screaming like a wailing banshee...seems to be a split in a pipe just below the manifold, someone disconnected the sensor to drop the boost pressure to stop the noise and the part ex'd it to the dealer i got it from...getting my mony back tomorrow...had enough...spent £4250 on it two weeks ago and barely driven it ...pissed off...
know anyone that has one for sale for around £4k?

Im sorry to hear that spuddy... Ive heard some horror stories about dodgy dealers and dodgy part ex's.. unfortunately there is not a lot you can do..
heres hoping whoever is responsible gets screwed over at some point
good luck with your search mate.

one of those things...just makes me very irritated that the last two cars i have had where damage repairables (salvage), an Audi Coupe 2.3 and a top spec Volvo S40 lasted me both for nearly 3 years each never had a problem with either of them and then i spend money a Beemer with FSH and its fecked lol...ahw ell...what can you do..money back day today..hopefully get the money back for the tax and some of the £100 in fuel driving back and fwd to the sales places warranty garage...
