My 1990 318is is knocking at the back

Hello forum

I have not had my 318 long but it has always knocked when i have accelerated hard at the back, im worried that it might be my diff unit. The persom oi brought it from failed to mention it... Mad

any ideas? Smile

Hi there,

The knock you are getting could be a number of things but I would take a closer look at the Diff mounts, these are known to cause the symptoms you are getting.

Do you get any knocks when going over bumps at all?

Also worth checking the rubber bush between the diff and prop shaft.

Dont immediately assume the worst. chances are it is just a bush somewhere...

i do get a thud when i reverse up my drive which is on a bit of a hill. my car handles ok which is what confuses me a bit. will the diff be move if the mounts are gone? i will have to have a look at it.

Sounds like you do have a problem with the diff mounts. If they are split then, they will cause the diff to move and that's probably the thud you are getting.

But you do need to get the car up in the air and take a look mate.

If you want to be cheeky and cant be bothered, take it down to your local Kwik fit and getb them to check it out and advise you....................its free Very Happy

LOL!! i might just do that.

are the mounts a cheap fix? are they easy to replace. i have axle stands and a jack is it possible to do without a ramp

pretty easy mate but if you just get the bushes without the carriers then you will need a press to remove and install them

unfortunatley i cant find diagrams for the e30 but the 5 series e34 is very similar... if you dont feel confident, a garage should'nt charge too much to replace them...

tock my car to ats today. it is a mount bush. its gone hard and brittle.
but ats said they cant do the work because it is a specialist job! Rolling Eyes

fools. i think i can do that myself.

Ive had the work done at my local garage, theres no way i could fit the time in to do the work. Crying or Very sad

But its fine now. thats one less problem to tick off the list that is now growing. Suspect
