does anybody have any idea what could be wrong with my heating system. the first thing I noticed last week on a very hot summers day the air con was not
working it was just blowing hot air at top vent middle vent and bottom now I took the car a (bmw 3 series 2001 w reg) to kwik fit and they regassed the air con which had no gass atall by the way and now it works slightly better in that I mean the top and bottom vents still blow hot air the middle vent blows nice cool cold air if either the bottom or top vent is set to open position but as soon as I close the top or bottom vent the nice cool cold air in the middle vent starts to get luke warm the guy back at kwik fit does not know but he says there must be something wrong with the heating matrix hope I have explained this well enough thanks your help will be graceiousley accepted

This sounds like your typical case of blocked or faulty heater valves. What engine size does your 3 series have?

Also, other than the air con, have you had the coolant system worked on, ie new thermostat, radiator or water pump?

thanks.

its a 318 i and the only other thing recently was the power steering went very stiff and very heavy so my wee local garage fitted a new pump in that and funny enough It
was after that the air con went and I took it back to them to get the air con fixed and It was them who suggested kwik fit to regass it

well, the reason i ask, is that air in the coolant system may cause issues, bleeding beemers can be a bit of a nightmare, hence when they are worked on, air is often mistaken for bigger faults...

here is a diagram of the heater valves http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AY72&mospid=47632&btnr=64_1169&hg=64&fg=18 number 5 and 6.

they are not difficult to replace if you are confident, but can be a little expensive to buy..or you can get down to a local bmw specialist (these often work to similar labour rates to local garages) to get them inspected...

hope this helps
